Who it is for
- Application, DevOps, SRE, and platform engineers preparing for the OpenTelemetry Certified Associate exam.
- Practitioners who need practice with OpenTelemetry APIs, SDKs, Collectors, and pipeline operations.
What this exam covers
- Fundamentals of Observability — 18%
- The OpenTelemetry API and SDK — 46%
- The OpenTelemetry Collector — 26%
- Maintaining and Debugging Observability Pipelines — 10%
What you will practice
- Choose signals, semantic conventions, and instrumentation style (API/SDK vs zero-code agents) for a given service.
- Configure TracerProvider/MeterProvider pipelines, OTLP exporters, samplers, and W3C context propagation, including baggage.
- Enable Collector receivers, processors, exporters, and connectors; compare agent vs gateway; scale scrapers and tail sampling.
- Debug silent hops with the debug exporter, zPages, and internal metrics, and apply schema URLs or a schema processor when backends expect a different convention version.
About this practice exam
The OpenTelemetry Certified Associate (OTCA) exam demonstrates a solid understanding of observability concepts and how the OpenTelemetry project enables them: the API and SDK, the Collector, and best practices for instrumenting cloud-native applications.
The OTCA is a pre-professional certification for application, DevOps, SRE, and platform engineers who collect traces, metrics, and logs across distributed systems. It validates that you can configure language SDKs, propagate context, run Collector pipelines, and debug telemetry flow.
The official exam is online, proctored, and multiple-choice (90 minutes). This practice exam follows the current Linux Foundation domain weights so you can drill the same areas the live blueprint emphasizes.
The OTCA validates understanding of:
- Observability fundamentals: telemetry signals, semantic conventions, code-based and zero-code instrumentation, and vendor-neutral analysis outcomes.
- The OpenTelemetry API and SDK: data model, composability, environment-variable configuration, traces/metrics/logs/baggage, SDK pipelines and sampling, context propagation, and agents.
- The OpenTelemetry Collector: configuration, agent and gateway deployment, scaling, pipelines, and transforming telemetry.
- Maintaining and debugging observability pipelines: propagation across hops, Collector troubleshooting, error handling and backpressure, and schema management.
