  • Run the core workflow: initialize a working directory, validate configuration, generate a plan, apply or destroy changes, and format configuration.
  • Author configuration with resource and data blocks, variables and outputs, complex types, expressions and functions, resource dependencies, custom conditions, and sensitive data including Vault.
  • Source, version, and use modules, including variable scope inside a module.
  • Configure local and remote backends, describe state locking, and manage drift with refresh, moved, and removed.
  • Import existing infrastructure, inspect state with the CLI, and use verbose logging.
  • Use HCP Terraform workspaces and projects, VCS, CLI, and API-driven runs, teams, policies, dynamic credentials, variable sets, run triggers, and change requests.

About this practice exam

The HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate exam tests foundational Terraform knowledge and skills: infrastructure as code, providers and state, the core workflow, configuration, modules, and HCP Terraform collaboration. This practice exam prepares you for HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004) across Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform, Terraform fundamentals, the core Terraform workflow, Terraform configuration, Terraform modules, Terraform state management, maintaining infrastructure with Terraform, and HCP Terraform.

The exam emphasizes writing and applying configuration, managing state and modules, importing and inspecting existing infrastructure, distinguishing Terraform Community features from HCP Terraform and Terraform Enterprise collaboration, and using HCP Terraform workspaces, projects, and governance features. It does not primarily assess Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced production authoring, writing custom provider plugins, or day-2 operations of Vault, Nomad, or Consul as the main objective.

The official HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004) exam is 60 minutes. HashiCorp publishes the exam as multiple choice and multi-select and does not publish a fixed question count or numeric passing score. This independent practice exam is not the official test and is not affiliated with HashiCorp; the bank covers the official Terraform Associate domains.

The certification validates understanding of:

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform: IaC benefits, Terraform’s multi-cloud and service-agnostic model, and when Terraform is the right workflow.
  • Terraform fundamentals: providers and the plugin model, installing and versioning providers, multi-provider configuration, and the purpose of state.
  • Core Terraform workflow: terraform init, validate, plan, apply, destroy, and fmt on a working directory.
  • Terraform configuration: resources and data sources, variables and outputs, complex types, expressions and functions, dependencies, custom conditions, and sensitive values including Vault.
  • Terraform modules: sourcing and versioning modules, inputs and outputs, and variable scope inside a module.
  • Terraform state management: local and remote backends, state locking, and reconciling drift with refresh, moved, and removed.
  • Maintain infrastructure with Terraform: importing existing infrastructure, inspecting state with the CLI, and verbose logging for troubleshooting.
  • HCP Terraform: workspaces and projects, VCS, CLI, and API-driven runs, teams, policies, dynamic credentials, variable sets, run triggers, and change requests versus Community edition.
