Who it is for

  • Developers, administrators, and project managers preparing for GitHub Copilot (GH-300).
  • Practitioners who already use GitHub and at least one programming language and need exam-style practice on Copilot features, prompting, data handling, and privacy controls.

What this exam covers

  • Use GitHub Copilot responsibly — 15–20%
  • Use GitHub Copilot features — 25–30%
  • Understand GitHub Copilot data and architecture — 10–15%
  • Apply prompt engineering and context crafting — 10–15%
  • Improve developer productivity with GitHub Copilot — 10–15%
  • Configure privacy, content exclusions, and safeguards — 10–15%

What you will practice

  • Apply responsible-use principles: review and validate suggestions, use content filters and public-code matching as safeguards, and keep human oversight on Chat, agents, and CLI approvals.
  • Work across Copilot surfaces: enable the IDE extension, choose Agent, Plan, or Ask, install and run Copilot CLI, attach MCP servers, organize context with Spaces, request code review, and manage org policies, audit logs, and seats via the REST API.
  • Explain how prompts are built, how filters run, how Business or Enterprise data is not used to train models, and how individual subscribers can opt out of training.
  • Write better prompts: start general then add specifics, use few-shot examples, manage chat history and threads, and attach the right files or chat participants.
  • Use Copilot for tests, refactors, docs, and security review, including /tests, mocks for integrations, and named edge cases.
  • Configure content exclusions at repository, organization, and enterprise scope, test them in the IDE, and interpret code references when public-code matches are allowed or blocked.

About this practice exam

This exam is designed for software developers, administrators, and project managers who use GitHub Copilot to improve productivity, quality, and security. Candidates should know responsible AI use, prompt engineering, Copilot features across plans, and privacy safeguards, plus GitHub fundamentals and at least one programming language.

The official GitHub Copilot exam (GH-300) is a proctored Microsoft certification. Microsoft publishes a scaled passing score of 700 and does not publish a fixed question count. Skills measured as of August 7, 2026 are listed below.

The certification validates understanding of:

  • Responsible AI: generative-AI risks and limits, ethical use, harms and mitigations, and the need to validate Copilot output.
  • Copilot features: IDE inline suggestions, Chat, Agent, Plan, and Ask modes, Copilot CLI, MCP, Spaces, Spark, pull request summaries, code review, prompt files, and organization policies, audit logs, and REST subscription management.
  • Data and architecture: prompt building, filtering and post-processing, suggestion lifecycle, LLM limits, and how Business and Enterprise data is handled versus individual plans.
  • Prompt engineering: prompt structure, how context is chosen, zero-shot and few-shot prompting, chat history, and best practices.
  • Developer productivity: generation, refactoring, documentation, sample data and legacy modernization, unit and integration tests, edge cases, and security or performance suggestions.
  • Privacy and safeguards: content exclusions, editor settings, output ownership limits, public-code matching, and troubleshooting exclusions and suggestions.
