CompTIA Linux+ Exam Preparation: A Practical Guide to XK0-006 (V8)
The Linux+ XK0-006 exam (CompTIA Linux+ V8) launched on July 15, 2025, and it’s now the only Linux+ version on CompTIA’s site. Expect up to 90 multiple-choice and performance-based questions in 90 minutes, with 720 needed on a 100-900 scale. Plenty of guides list what’s new. We put the XK0-005 and XK0-006 objective PDFs side by side, and honestly, what got cut tells you as much about where to spend your study time.

Linux+ XK0-006 domains and weights
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| System Management | 23% |
| Services and User Management | 20% |
| Security | 18% |
| Automation, Orchestration, and Scripting | 17% |
| Troubleshooting | 22% |
XK0-005 had four domains. Services and User Management is new, and containers moved into it from the old scripting domain.
What’s actually new
- Python (4.3): virtual environments, built-in modules, data types and PEP 8. The old objectives didn’t mention Python once.
- Virtualization (1.7): QEMU/KVM, libvirt, virsh, VirtIO, converting and resizing disk images.
- AI (4.5): using AI for code, regex and IaC, reviewing its output, and keeping company data out of public models.
- Smaller additions you’ll see in questions: Netplan, RISC-V and AArch64, OpenSCAP, CIS Benchmarks, AIDE, rkhunter, WireGuard, LUKS2 with Argon2, fail2ban, SLOs and SNMP. The Git list now includes stash, reset, fetch, log and squash merges.
What was removed (most guides skip this)
You’ll read that Ansible and Puppet are new. They aren’t – XK0-005 already named Ansible, Puppet, Chef, SaltStack and Terraform. The change is that Chef, SaltStack and Terraform are gone, OpenTofu took Terraform’s place, and Ansible and Puppet now come with detail: playbooks, inventory, facts, ad hoc commands, Puppet classes and certificates.
Also dropped from the lists: AppArmor (SELinux is the only MAC system left), ifconfig and netstat, the grub2-* commands, localectl, Flatpak and AppImage, faillock, multipathd, plus Kubernetes sidecars and service mesh. Kubernetes itself stayed but shifted toward ConfigMaps, Secrets and Deployments, and Docker Swarm joined it.
One odd thing: pam_tally2 is still listed, although Linux-PAM dropped it in version 1.5.0 back in 2020. Learn it, and learn faillock anyway, since that’s what you’ll meet on a real server. CompTIA also says its lists aren’t exhaustive, so a removed tool is lower priority, not banned.
Exam-day and retake rules
V8 is offered in English only for now. If you fail, you can retake right away, but from the third attempt on you wait at least 14 days, and every attempt is paid. Once you pass, you can’t sit the same exam code again without CompTIA’s consent. Testing from home? Our Pearson VUE test center vs online guide covers the check-in.
A 4-week plan
- Week 1: LVM from pvcreate to lvextend, then xfs_growfs vs resize2fs, fstab mount options, nmcli and Netplan.
- Week 2: users, systemd units and timers. Run one container with both Podman and Docker and mount a volume with an SELinux label.
- Week 3: firewalld runtime vs permanent rules, sudoers, ACLs, SELinux booleans and LUKS2.
- Week 4: write a backup script in Bash, rewrite it in Python, wrap it in a two-task Ansible playbook, then switch to timed practice, because PBQs eat the clock fast.
Renewal and practice
Linux+ is valid for three years, and you renew it with 50 CEUs through CompTIA’s Continuing Education program.
For timed practice, try our CompTIA Linux+ practice exam. The $1 trial is deducted when you upgrade, and every plan has a 14-day money-back guarantee.
Facts come from the official CompTIA Linux+ page, the XK0-006 (v5.0) and XK0-005 objective PDFs, and CompTIA’s retake and CE policies. Check CompTIA before you book.
